Oh such sweet memories that come from my oldest grandaughter in the summer of her 17th year. I remember...I remember...
That was the last year I went on a family road trip across the US. We drove to Michigan and back. We stopped at a Lake in Wisconson. That was the summer I learned to water ski. My best girlfriend and her family were with us. We giggled about the boys we met. We worried about our hair and worked on our tans. We spent many a day hanging around Life Guard Stand #2 at Huntington State Beach and strolling up and down the pier watching the surfers... dancing to Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys! Wednesday nights after Youth group we would all hang out and dance in the parking lot (of our Quaker Church..hehe) Trying to copy the dancers of West Side Story, that had just come out. (When you're a jet...) Saturday mornings Guys would spend washing their (or most likely their parents) cars because Sat nights were for "cruising" up and down Whittier Blvd and stopping at the drive-in Bob's Big Boy for Coke and Fries. After they dropped us girls off, they would glide down Turnbull Canyon and try not to use the brakes. (Yikes....just thinking about that makes my skin crawl today)
Summer jobs for "fun tickets"... crickets chirping at the La Mirada drive-in. We dreamt about the future and worried about the (Vietnam) war. We wondered about the flower children...and applied for college. We frustrated our parents...and loved our little sisters' and brothers'. Here is a glimpse of what my granddaughers' days are like! "i love the way summer tastes like peaches and blueberries, like home made ice cream and like steaks on the grill! i love the way it feels like sand and sun and water and not having a care in the world! i love meeting new totally random people and not worryin about what anybody thinks. i love how you can have tons of people spend the night last minute on a tuesday. i love how easily bodies can adapt to the sleeping time they were created for: 3 am-11 am. i love seeing the stars again! i love speedin with the windows down and singing at the top of my lungs!! i love how many more people stay even later at youth g. i love the midnight dance parties and the family barbecues. i love sleeping on my best friends grandparents porch after we get out of the hottub, where the three of us can lay, just like we have these past few summers, and fall asleep with bathing suits, candles, and conversations inspired by stars. i love the sound of crickets and little frogs, i love fishing until it so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face. i love the sounds of an acoustic guitar and the glow of a campfire. oh gosh don't even get me started on how much I LOVE SUMMER CAMP! i love seeing my cousins and taking trips. i love how there is time for my favorite thing (BREAKFAST!) everyday. i love how it means one more year of school- and then we can steer ourselves whatever direction we choose. i can't believe we here. so this is my summer rant. its the time idaho kids dream about all those snowy school months. its HERE! and i am falling in love with it all over again :)"
